The magnets. Neodymium (NdFeB) is the standard. It holds its strength for decades, losing roughly 1% of field strength per hundred years under normal conditions. Cheaper bracelets use ferrite magnets, which are weaker and larger for the same output.

The metal. Pure copper, copper alloy, titanium steel, or stainless steel. This decides weight, skin reaction, patina, and price more than anything else.

The construction. Single, double, or triple row of links. More rows means more magnets, more wrist coverage, and more weight.

How Magnetic Bracelets Are Supposed to Work

The proposed mechanism has been the same for decades. A static magnetic field is said to influence blood flow in the capillaries near the skin, and improved local circulation is said to reduce inflammation and speed the clearance of pain signaling compounds. Some versions of the theory add effects on nerve cell membranes or on iron in hemoglobin.

The problem is depth. A 3,000 gauss magnet measured at its own surface drops off sharply with distance. By the time the field reaches tissue a centimeter below the skin it is a small fraction of the surface number, and blood is only weakly diamagnetic to begin with. The physics does not obviously support the mechanism, which is the main reason mainstream medicine has stayed skeptical.

That said, the bracelet still does two real things. It puts light pressure on the wrist, and it acts as a daily reminder that you are doing something about your joints. Neither is magic, and neither is nothing.

What the Research Actually Says

Here is the evidence, without spin.

The most cited positive result is a 2004 randomized controlled trial published in the BMJ by Harlow and colleagues. It gave 194 people with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee either a standard-strength magnetic bracelet, a weak magnetic bracelet, or a non-magnetic dummy. The standard magnet group reported a mean reduction of 1.3 points on the WOMAC pain scale compared with the dummy group. The authors themselves noted the result could be explained by people correctly guessing which bracelet they had.

The most cited negative result is a 2013 trial in PLOS ONE by Richmond and colleagues. It was a double-blind crossover study of 70 people with rheumatoid arthritis, testing copper bracelets and magnetic wrist straps against controls. It found no meaningful difference in pain, inflammatory markers, or disease activity.

The broadest review is a 2007 meta-analysis in CMAJ by Pittler, Brown and Ernst, covering nine randomized trials of static magnets for pain. It concluded that the evidence does not support the use of static magnets for pain relief. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health takes the same position: there is not convincing scientific evidence that magnets relieve pain.

The honest summary: the evidence does not show that magnetic bracelets outperform a placebo, and the placebo effect in chronic pain is genuinely large. If a bracelet makes your wrist feel better, that experience is real even if the mechanism is not.

Quick rule of thumb

Pick pure copper if you want the classic warm look and you do not mind a green mark or an occasional polish. It is the traditional choice and the one most people picture.

How Much Gauss Do You Actually Need?

Gauss measures magnetic flux density. It is the spec sellers shout about most and the one most often inflated. The number that matters is the rating measured at the magnet's own surface. Some listings quote "core gauss" instead, which reads two to three times higher and describes a point inside the magnet you will never touch.

How to Wear a Magnetic Bracelet

There is no medically established correct way to wear one, but there are practices that make the experience better and mistakes worth avoiding.

Wear it on your non-dominant wrist first. It takes less impact, catches on fewer things, and the bracelet stays in better condition. If you are targeting a specific sore joint, wear it on that side instead.

Who Should Not Wear One

Magnetic bracelets are low risk for most healthy adults, but there are clear exceptions.

People with implanted electronic medical devices. Pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, and insulin pumps can be affected by strong magnets at close range. Device manufacturers advise keeping magnets at least 6 inches (15 cm) away.
