Most magnetic therapy bracelets on the market carry magnets rated between 800 and 3,500 gauss each. The largest clinical trial of magnetic bracelets to date used 1,700 to 2,000 gauss. Higher numbers are not automatically better: what matters is where the rating is measured, how many magnets the band holds, and whether the seller is honest about both.

Gauss is the number every magnetic bracelet listing throws at you, and almost none of them explain it. This guide covers what gauss actually measures, what strength researchers used in real trials, the typical ranges you will see while shopping, and how to spot a strength claim that does not add up.

What Does Gauss Actually Measure?

Gauss is a unit of magnetic flux density, the strength of a magnetic field at a specific point. Scientists also use the tesla: 1 tesla equals 10,000 gauss, and 1 millitesla equals 10 gauss. When a bracelet listing says 3,500 gauss, it is describing the field strength at one measured point, almost always at the surface of the magnet itself.

Some everyday reference points put the numbers in perspective:

  • A refrigerator magnet holds around 50 to 100 gauss
  • A typical magnetic therapy bracelet magnet is rated 800 to 3,500 gauss
  • An MRI machine runs at 1.5 to 3 tesla, which is 15,000 to 30,000 gauss

Rated Gauss vs. What Reaches Your Skin

The rating on the box and the field at your skin are two different numbers. A magnet's field weakens sharply with distance: within a few millimeters, a 3,500 gauss surface reading can fall to a fraction of that value. The metal casing around the magnet, the thickness of the band, and how loosely the bracelet sits all widen that gap.

This is why two details matter more than the headline number. First, whether the rating is a surface measurement of each magnet rather than an internal core value, which reads higher and means little for the wearer. What Strength Did Researchers Actually Use?

The most cited clinical trial of magnetic bracelets was published in the BMJ in 2004. Harlow and colleagues randomized 194 adults aged 45 to 80 with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee to wear either a standard-strength magnetic bracelet, a weak one, or a non-magnetic dummy for 12 weeks. The standard bracelets measured 170 to 200 millitesla, which is 1,700 to 2,000 gauss.

The standard-strength group reported a larger drop in pain scores than the dummy group. The authors were straightforward about the limits of that finding: they could not rule out a placebo effect, partly because some participants may have discovered which bracelet they were wearing. A 2007 systematic review in the CMAJ went further and concluded that the evidence for static magnets relieving pain remains unconvincing overall.

The honest takeaway: the best-known trial used 1,700 to 2,000 gauss and reported a benefit it could not fully separate from placebo. Treat a magnetic bracelet as a wellness accessory you enjoy wearing, and treat any listing that promises medical results with suspicion.

That research context also sets a useful shopping floor. If the trial that reported an effect used 1,700 gauss and up, magnets rated far below that range are mostly decorative. Typical Gauss Ranges and What They Mean

Rating per magnet What it usually means
Under 500 gauss Decorative. Ferrite magnets or loose claims. Below anything used in research.
800 to 1,500 gauss Entry level. Common in fashion-first bracelets with small ferrite or low-grade magnets.
1,700 to 3,000 gauss The range covering the BMJ trial hardware and most mid-tier neodymium bracelets.
3,000 to 3,500 gauss High-strength neodymium, the practical ceiling for magnets small enough to embed in a band.
"10,000+ gauss" claims Marketing. Surface fields that high are implausible for bracelet-sized magnets. Walk away.

Magnet count matters alongside the per-magnet rating. Twenty 3,500 gauss magnets spaced around the band keep a strong field near your skin at every point of the wrist. Two magnets at the clasp do not, whatever their rating. Neodymium magnets also hold their strength: they lose only a few percent of their field over decades, so a quality bracelet does not fade in any meaningful way.

How to Vet a Gauss Claim Before You Buy

Ask where the number is measured. A per-magnet surface rating is the honest spec. "Core gauss" reads two to three times higher and tells you little.

Look for the word neodymium. It is the strongest permanent magnet material in consumer products. Unnamed "magnets" are usually weak ferrite.

Safety: When Magnets Are the Wrong Choice

Static magnets in the bracelet range have no established harm for the general public. Two exceptions deserve a plain warning. If you have a pacemaker, an implanted defibrillator, or an insulin pump, keep magnetic jewelry away: device manufacturers advise keeping strong magnets at least 6 inches from the implant, and a bracelet worn all day is an easy thing to forget.
